“Gus”
Aryze Angus Peebles MacDuff
In 1984 I decided I wanted to get a purebred collie. I couldn’t find anyone who knew anyone who had collies and then one day I saw a lady walking her dog – a collie – so I just stopped her and asked her where she got the dog. She told me the lady’s name was Alison Peters (Aryze-N-Shyne Collies) but couldn’t remember for certain what town she lived in. As it turned out Alison lived in Alger – which is where I live – but Alger covers a lot of territory. Long story short, I contacted Alison and it just happened that she had a 2 week old litter. I went to her house and liked Alison immediately. Over the years we learned we had a lot in common and 16 years after we first met we discovered we were actually shirt tail relations!! I selected Gus with the full intention of having him neutered since he was just going to be my buddy but Alison talked me out of it – after all, he was the pick of the litter. Over time, she introduced me to Judy Ardine of Down East Collies and Janie Cowell of Promenader Collies and through Judy I met Earl Rogers of Decor Collies. When he was two years old Judy agreed that Gus was show quality and offered to handle him at his first dog show for me. He went in the ring at the Detroit Kennel Club show at Cobo Hall under breeder/judge Dorothy Welsh. At that point I knew nothing about dog shows and I was just as excited when he placed third in his class as I would have been if he’d won Winners Dog!! When we got home that day, Gus bred his first bitch. It was a very memorable day for both of us!
