Steve was a remarkable dog.  He managed to survive several unbelievable anomalies.  First of all, at five weeks of age he developed some type of intestinal virus that attacked almost the entire litter of thirteen.  Although my vet thought it was parvo, all the tests came back negative.  Then, Steve lost all function of his rear legs.  He was a very small puppy and had a lot against him, but I was determined to keep him alive.  I put him in a tub of water several times a day and encouraged him to swim.  This exercise and a change in diet got him past that problem and then he developed something totally bizarre which I had never seen before – or since.  I literally watched his front legs turn into question marks.  Both legs curved to the left above the knee, then pulled back in line below the knee.  My vet thought this might be reason enough to euthanize him, but I took him to see an orthopod at the hospital where I worked and he said we had to splint the legs immediately.  We put human finger splints on his legs and within 24 hours they were back to normal!  I regret not having photographed this phenomenon!  After all of that, Steve grew up to be a gorgeous dog and I took him to my first CCA National at Tampa in 1992.  He went 5th in the class!
